Abstract
The effect of pretreatments, cold storage, and various holding solutions on the vase life of cut hybrid delphinium (Delphinium ¡¿ elatum) was investigated. ¢¥Pacific Giant Lilac¢¥ delphinium was harvested and pulsed with 0.4 mM STS + 7% sucrose and 0.4 mM STS + 7% sucrose + 100 ppm GA©ý + 1 mM MnCl©ü for 2 hr. These delphiniums were stored with dipping the stems in distilled water or wrapped in a newspaper at 4¡É for 1 and 2 weeks, and then held in distilled water or preservative solution with 150 ppm 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate (HQS) + 2% sucrose. Vase life, fresh weight, solution uptake, and ethylene gas production were measured. As the storage duration increased, vase life, solution uptake, and fresh weight were decreased. Pretreatments containing STS + sucrose or STS + sucrose + GA©ý + MnCl©ü before storage extended vase life about 5 days longer than controls regardless of storage duration and methods. The preservative solution with 150 ppm HQS + 2% sucrose increased vase life by 4 days than control and improved quality in 0 and 1 week storage of cut delphinium. Ethylene production from cut delphinium increased before dropping of flower leaf, then decreased. Ethylene production from the flowers held in HQS + sucrose after STS + sucrose increased highest point 3 days later than that of water. These solution inhibited microbial contamination and maintained structural role in vascular cambium tissue of the stem.
